Delerium – Consciousness Of Love

Let’s start with the lyrics:

“The Consciousness of Love doesn’t understand
The white lies and the alibis of a wicked man
The purity of trust only seeks to find
The truth within the nothingness

Wants me in the oceans of the light
Fill my soul eternally
Solace brings the darkness of the night
And dances in the flame…

Of the consciousness of love
The consciousness of love

The consciousness of love is the patient calm
That stirs within the eye of the perfect storm
The fate of all the lights on the wings of a butterfly
That nothingness is calling

Take me where the ocean meets the light
Blowing in the ecstasy
Solace brings the darkness of the night
And revels in the flame
Of the consciousness of love

What happens when these sweet verses meet a vulnerable, honest voice to bless their words and a sprawling, effervescent electronic orchestration? The result is a tune that is absolutely… nutritious. The words are food for thought and the crunchy sound textures are like a shower for the eardrum.

When you’re in search for beautiful vocals coupled with uncompromising instrumentals and good lyrics, look no further than Delerium. One day, or one eternity outside time, I’d like to dance this song together with you. Yes, with you, You!

Susanne Sundfor – The Silicone Veil

The first thing that stands out on this track is Susanne’s amazing voice. The instrumental is subdued and makes a lot of room for her to unfold. And unfold she does, showing magnificent strength and range. But don’t worry, there’s much more that this song has to offer besides the convincing vocal performance (which is among the best I’ve heard in years).

Synth veils will soon join the singer and lead us into the lively portion of the melody. It’s not long until we’re treated with a beautiful orchestral arrangement. My only gripe with the composition is the ending, which is not in such a good harmony with the rest of the melody.

The live performance is beautiful in its own right and I highly recommend watching it.

“let the stars be my eyes then
unchain the knuckles and latches
unbutton my wrists.
My skin so thin you can see black holes within
My eyes so clear they light up the sky
And sometimes I’ll bend into the silicone veil
And enter this world again as a ghost
Beauty is poisonous
Disruptive
Oh, heaven must be an iron rose
Unfolding…”

Hybrid – Enjoy The Silence

Leave it to Hybrid to turn an already good song (by Depeche Mode) into a mixture of lush, rich sound with a convincing buildup and a beautiful detour that leads to a sparkling climax. This is a hybrid made up of all the goodness of electronica and the richness of the human voice. Oh, and it’s anything but silent, of course :).

“All I ever wanted
All I ever needed
Is here in my arms
Words are very unnecessary
They can only do harm
Vows are spoken
To be broken
Feelings are intense
Words are trivial
Pleasures remain
So does the pain
Words are meaningless
And forgettable”

Conjure One – Like Ice (feat. Jaren)

This one starts off with an arguably unremarkable, 1 minute long intro. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not bad. An intro is valuable to emphasize the part when the melody gets going. I just think that this intro doesn’t really do justice to the song.

The melody is groovy yet dreamy, showcasing the strong, evocative voice of the one called Jaren. She’s accompanied by an army of synths and sparse piano arrangements. Rhys Fulber (of Delerium^ fame) doesn’t waste a beat here (which I measure by thinking if I would like the song if I would listen to the instrumental-only version). Even after a couple of listens I can still find new intricate sound textures. The lyrics are quite good too and that’s always a bonus.

“When the sun was strong
And shadows grew so long
She stole her way
Into your empty heart

And she moved like ice
She was cool and blue like ice
No flaws on her, no imperfections
She changed your direction
What could you do”

Baby Alpaca – Sea of Dreams (Turbotito Remix)

Baby Alpaca’s “Sea of Dreams” is a calm, beautiful song, which is why I linked it below as well. Turbotito’s remix is, however, more to this (dreamy) listener’s linking. The clever use of echo and resonance gives the song a different (dreamy) texture.

Both versions of the song are equally evocative and they share the same good (and dreamy) lyrics. They are both relying on lots of reverb to invoke the (dreamy) mood. It’s due to my love of electronica that I choose the remix version as title (and main feature) of this (dreamy) Weekly Song entry, even though you can find both (dreamy) songs here.

“Dawn’s growing from the sea
Reflections lilac in the clouds
Sea lion’s black eyes awaken me
Takes me to the sea of dreams

We wade in a sea of dreams
Swimming free in the mountain breeze
Far out where it’s dark and deep
Dawn’s horizon sets us free”

Delerium – Heaven’s Earth (feat. Kristy Thirsk)

From the very first minute of this song we are greeted by an impressive array of instruments and motifs. The mélange of electronica, choirs and acoustic instruments continues to mature well into the second minute. Only then is the melody truly taking off as Kristy’s voice blossoms.

The acoustic and vocal part of the song is transported into the future by means of shiny, spotless electronic beats. Evocative choirs join Kristy as she sings her way towards the ecstatic end.

This is a journey of surprising diversity and intensity. Eyes-closed listening is highly recommended.

Delerium and Kristy Thirsk is a pair made in heaven. I’ll be even more subjective than I usually am for my Weekly Song collection and declare that this partnership is one of the best marriages of electronic music and female singing to have ever graced this Earth. Just listen to songs such as Ray^, Flowers Become Screens^ or Sky (Tears From Heaven)^. It’s true that Delerium are masters of incorporating female vocals into awesome electronic music, but the collaboration with Kristy is one of the band’s highest moments in this listener’s humble opinion.

“This spoiled seduction
Intoxicates thee,
So balanced on my halo
You long secretly
Could it, could it be
Love’s what you deny me?
Don’t deny yourself
‘Cause I know what you want
You can’t deny me
We’ll be together
So try to run, love
But you won’t get away
Could it, could it be
Love’s what you deny me”

YouTube (decent quality, and the ONLY online source I could find the song at):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OnhtlHPt0pY^

Neither Spotify nor Deezer have the full version of the song. They do, however, have an “album edit” version. Unfortunately, the version has been hacked at mercilessly so that it becomes a shadow of its former self. You can also find dance remixes of the song, which I find rather sad and boring. So, I won’t link anything else but the YouTube, original version. Perhaps in a few years the Record Industry will get its act together and start properly digitizing works of art. See you on Bandcamp!

Sleepthief – Desire Of Ages (feat. Harland)

A diverse instrumental landscape will delight the listener throughout this meaningful lyrical journey. The song begins with an evocative arrangement that sets the stage for the uplifting message. Without Harland’s voice this would have been “just” a good fusion between acoustic and electronic music. Not only does she deliver, but the lyrics are lovely too.

“I’m not afraid of the distance
The shadow left behind
I’m not ashamed to look my fear in the eye
I will embrace the emotion
Pain will disappear
Holding your face in my hands
I will wipe away your tears

We will find a brighter sun
As our secrets come undone
Now the boundaries of our love need a new heaven, a new earth
Our hearts in the hands of time”

Enigma – Following The Sun

Enigma went all optimistic on this one. The percussion carries the song, at least until the evocative singing pushes the adventure towards uplifting chanting. A wild and happy chase rushes the listener on corridors of sound where acoustic instruments are fused with well-chosen electronic textures.

“Following the sun, to find the one
Who’s giving you the wings to fly
Following the sun, the golden one
Losing sense for space and time”

Madonna – Ray Of Light

Oldie but goldie is probably applicable to a song which is almost 20 years old. This is one of the jewels scattered through Madonna’s art. It’s highly danceable and full of positive energy. A lot of intricate beat construction went into this melody. It’s one of those songs that reward the attentive listener. The well written, descriptive lyrics, turn this piece into quite a ride.

Due to her commercial success, many have disregarded or labeled Madonna’s music. That’s a costly mistake to make, for as an artist, Madonna has evolved and changed considerably throughout the years. The “Bedtime Stories” and “Ray Of Light” albums seem to me to be among her most genuine and profound works. Especially on “Ray Of Light”, her voice seems to have reached a peak of… honesty, if you will.

“Faster than the speeding light she’s flying
Trying to remember where it all began
She’s got herself a little piece of heaven
Waiting for the time when Earth shall be as one”

Delerium – Blue Fires

Welcome to the dream. The dream takes place inside her mind while she floats inside ours, carried by blue fires and ephemeral sounds. Take her hand, dance, that’s why the rhythm is there. Fly, sway, let the music take you away.

Harmonies and echoes ease the melody’s flow into our imagination, where it shines and soothes. If there would be such a thing as a contemporary musical definition of dreamy, then I think this song should be among the prime examples. There’s nothing that screams “fantastic production values” louder than a solid Delerium song. Love at first listen.

“Blue fires burning again
In my head
All the things we left unsaid
In my head”

You can listen to the song for free, in good quality, on BandCamp, which is one of the best websites when it comes to supporting artists. You can also purchase the song (or album) from this same location. And in case you’re wondering, yes, I did purchase Delerium’s album :). After all, it’s my favorite band at the moment and I was waiting for this album for years. There, I’ve said it!
