Rag’n’Bone Man – Human (Acoustic)

A stellar vocal performance is what makes this song shine. Even though the instrumental is perpetually in the background, it is in such harmony with the singer that it gets pulled right up on the stage with equal rights. There’s more creativity in the song’s use of piano and guitar than there is in most contemporary songs that feature twice or more instruments.

“I’m only human
I’m only, I’m only
I’m only human, human

Maybe I’m foolish
Maybe I’m blind
Thinking I can see through this
And see what’s behind
Got no way to prove it
So maybe I’m blind
But I’m only human after all
I’m only human after all
Don’t put your blame on me
Don’t put your blame on me

Take a look in the mirror
And what do you see
Do you see it clearer
Or are you deceived
In what you believe
‘Cause I’m only human after all
You’re only human after all
Don’t put the blame on me
Don’t put your blame on me

Some people got the real problems
Some people out of luck
Some people think I can solve them
Lord heavens above
I’m only human after all
I’m only human after all
Don’t put the blame on me
Don’t put the blame on me”

Alexander – Truth

It may start careless and airy, but this isn’t a happy travel song nor a Sunday family gathering tune. Listen carefully to what’s being said. Get down into it and enjoy the depth and range of the message. The music is rich. It flows and transforms gently, leaving plenty of room for a wide array of singing styles to grace our ears. Indeed, this melody is quite the feast when it comes to vocals.

The video is interesting to say the least. Perhaps even more challenging than the lyrics.

“The truth is that I never shook my shadow
Every day it’s trying to trick me into doing battle

[…]

And when the darkness come let it inside you
Your darkness is shining
My darkness is shining
Have faith in myself

Truth

I’ve seen a million numbered doors on the horizon
Now which is the future you choosin’ before you go dying
I’ll tell you ’bout a secret I’ve been undermin’
Every little lie in this world come from dividing
Say you’re my lover, say you’re my homie
Tilt my chin back slit my throat take a bath in my blood get to know me
All out of my secrets
All my enemies are turning into my teachers
Because, lights blinding, No way dividing
What’s yours or mine When everything’s shining”

The Handsome Family – Far From Any Road

This song starts with some of the most beautiful percussion I’ve heard lately. It’s exquisitely laid-back and relaxing but in the same time, solemn and evocative. The lyrics bring home what is definitely a true musical gem.

Alternative country is a very interesting musical style. These handsome artists and their expertly mixing indie folk in it have just made it even more interesting. I wish this song was 2 hours long, but its short length is what makes it so charming. Welcome to the paradox that is art.

“From the dusty mesa, her looming shadow grows
Hidden in the branches of the poison creosote

She twines her spines up slowly towards the boiling sun,
And when I touched her skin, my fingers ran with blood.

[…]

And rise with me forever across the silent sand,
And the stars will be your eyes and the wind will be my hands.”
