Sofa Surfers – Out, Damn Light (feat. Mani Obeya)

It’s one of those songs that flow, one of those songs that go from start to finish in a casual, unassuming way. The singer probably contributes a lot to this feeling. So do the lyrics. It’s also one of those songs where the music and the singing are so tightly intertwined that taking away the voice would seriously cripple the composition (there are entire albums out there that work just fine in an instrumental-only guise).

I find the musical style quite original too. Sure, I guess it can be classified as post-rock or something like that, but I feel there’s more to it. There’s a little extra novelty, and that’s pleasant for the ear to digest. While I haven’t really understood the meaning behind the “out, damn light” verse, I have to say that I like the lyrics too.

“I own nothin’ more than the ground that I sit on, the ground that I sit on
So I make myself comfortable cuz’ I’m the king of the Earth
Sitting on my throne of dirt and I’ll rule these stinking slums
In a rain of a walkin’-talking’-ticking bombs”

All India Radio – Four Three

Dreamy yet action-packed, this song showcases a beautiful combination of instruments. Distorted percussion, guitars, violins, they all play their part in leading up to her voice. The way she’s introduced to the listener is beautiful and serves as a cornerstone for the entire composition. If it wasn’t for the few words she speaks, this would’ve been just a good rock song. Like so, it’s a colorful musical journey.

“Welcome to my world.
Stay. You are not alone.”

It also comes with one of the quirkiest videos I’ve seen lately.

You can listen to the song for free, in good quality, on BandCamp, which is one of the best websites when it comes to supporting artists. You can also purchase the song (or album) from this same location. And in case you’re wondering, yes, I did purchase All India Radio’s album :).

Au4 – Over The Edge It Goes

Showcasing an impressive amount of craftsmanship, this song is one fascinating ride ending with a long, beautiful guitar solo. There are some seriously wicked grooves here, people! The lyrics are strong too and the way they’re sung is also perfect for the atmosphere that the artists are trying to create.

14 minutes you say? The last five minutes are a bit of a drag you say? Not really, it’s all part of the cool-down that the two brothers making up the core of Au4 have in store for us via what is the last song of their album. Speaking of which, this is one of the best rock albums I’ve heard in the past few years. There are some gorgeous musical gems scattered through Au4’s “… And Down Goes The Sky”. I highly recommend listening to the entire album, especially since it’s freely available on the artist’s website!

Au4 – In Three Seconds I’ll Be Gone

“Here’s a story about a girl I once loved
And I’d still love her if she was still around.”

Groovy, beautifully constructed, powerful and diverse, this melody showcases fascinating vocal synergy and witty lyrics. Prepare for an unleashing of samples, synthesizers and traditional rock instruments, all of it supporting his and her voice.

This song comes from one of the best rock albums I’ve heard in the past few years. There are some impressive lyrical gems scattered through Au4’s “And Down Goes The Sky”. I highly recommend listening to the entire album, especially since it’s freely available on the artist’s website!

“Oh when I came here I was lost and forgotten
Until then the sun rose in the dawn.
And I just meant to stay forever here running
But in three seconds I’ll be gone.

And I can’t remember my name. It’s forgotten,
And they all told me I was wrong.
‘Cause I just meant to stay forever here loving
But in three seconds I’ll be gone.”
