Michael McCann – Icarus

This song is the very definition of epic. It’s a finale of divine proportions, mightily constructed through a crescendo of sweeping orchestra of strings, synths and beyond-majestic choirs.

And yes, this was created for Deus Ex – Human Revolution^, a must-play video game, one of the best games of 2010s.

Asura – El Hai

This is one intense piece of soul-blowing song. The ethereal mystic vocals, the hypnotic percussion and the melancholic strings are woven together into a noble flow that graces the beauty of existence upon the eardrum. It’s one of those melodies that I’d use to describe life without using words (as long as, like me, the listener doesn’t understand the lyrics). I’m curious if anybody can translate what she’s saying.

You can listen to the melody for free, in good quality, on BandCamp, which is one of the best websites when it comes to supporting artists. You can also purchase the song (or album) from this same location. And in case you’re wondering, yes, I did purchase Asura’s album :).

Isihia – Transfiguration

Ghosts of clouds are dancing upon the endless plains of eternity. A silky mist envelops seven silhouettes as they walk up to an old wooden stage. There, one picks up a guitar, another picks up a flute, another picks up a strange cylinder filled with grains of sand that have been hand-picked from the countless imaginary worlds that these pilgrims have been through. Allow them to explore your world and observe what the evocative chanting stirs up.

Isihia come from Bulgaria. I strongly recommend listening to the entire album “Transfiguration” comes from. It’s an amazing creation!

Solstafir – Fjara

In the mood for some excellent metal music? This song’s multidimensional beauty never ceases to amaze. With every passing second, we are rising, step by step, towards the divine nature of art. The choir with which the song ends is one of the most evocative I’ve ever heard. Splendid instrumentation and structure complete the masterpiece.

Delerium – Silence (feat. Sarah McLachlan)

Let yourself soar through a heavenly landscape of sound. You’ll find that Sarah’s moving voice has the perfect companion in the beautifully orchestrated instrumental ladder towards perfection.

This melody was famous almost a decade ago due to a remix by Tiesto, which, in my opinion, completely ruined the sacred feeling of this amazingly powerful song.

Even though I had heard Delerium before, it was a car ride around the year 2011 that brought the band back into my life. Even at low volume and interrupted by occasional conversation, this song shone through. This time, I was ready to explore what has become my unrivaled, favorite band for the past 5 years straight.

Delerium’s art might be confused with a sort of danceable, electronic pop music. Perhaps this is good, because hiding under the easy-listenable sounds are often very beautiful lyrics. For every hit-song, there are many gems hidden among Delerium’s albums, just waiting to be discovered.

Let the ritual begin :).

“Passion chokes the flower, till she cries no more
Possessing all the beauty, hungry still for more.

Heaven holds a sense of wonder, and I wanted to believe
That I’d get caught up when the rage in me subsides
In this white wave I am sinking, in this silence
In this white wave, in this silence, I believe”

Apollo 440 – Stealth Mass in F#M

If somebody would ask me to explain what life is without using words, I’d play this song for them. Actually, I’ve come to believe that words are of very little use when describing fundamental concepts such as life, consciousness or emotions. The more we use words, the further we get from what we try to describe. Most things need to be experienced to be understood.

Yet, here is my humble attempt to write a few words about this glorious song. It starts with her voice, a voice that surrenders to the mysteries of ineffable depths. Then comes the music. They orbit each other in a cathedral of majestic sound. The melody builds, flows, recedes and then comes back for the final ecstasy.

The journey is too beautiful to describe in anything but hyperbole. When I mentioned a cathedral of sound, I literally meant that. This song is architecture through music. There’s the deep, thumping pulse that contrasts the divine voice. There’s the lonely, repetitive chord, the echoing bell, the sweeping curtains of prolonged notes and sounds.

Hopefully these words will stir your curiosity. So dare to close your eyes and see what this song speaks to your mind. Take your own journey. Forget my words, throw them away and paint your own landscape.

When I posted this song on the FaceBook page of the Weekly Song, more than a year ago, I wrote a few different words about it. I’m pasting them below, as an alternate, perhaps even more honest review of this musical jewel.

“I truly rediscovered this song in 2013 and it became one of the most moving melodies that I ever had the joy to experience. I could write a short essay about the feelings and thoughts that this song evokes, but I fear that this will rob this work of art of some of its value. Take my word and listen to this one eyes closed, see what it does to you.”
