Hocico – Beings Of Relief (Instrumental)

Aliens came to Earth some years ago, descended upon Mexico City and, together with two talented musicians, created this little trip for us. It’s true! This is exactly the sort of music aliens are listening to when they sledge it around the galaxy in their party cruiser – mysterious spacey synths, excellent percussion and the all-conquering God-drum. This is a solid thumper that (in my not so humble opinion) shouldn’t be missing from any decent electronica collection.

Power Glove – Motorcycle Cop

This is one little marvelous dark gem. It serves its goods on the same plate with pinpricks of lighter, lively sounds, but these are only offered to emphasize the overall somber mood. Without any lyrics to tell stories about the motorcycle cop, distorted male voices, the occasional siren and motor sounds make an excellent job of constructing an atmosphere that gives an efficient, wordless message.

You can listen to the melody for free, in good quality, on BandCamp, which is one of the best websites when it comes to supporting artists. You can also purchase the song (or album) from this same location. And in case you’re wondering, yes, I did purchase Power Glove’s album :).

Zentriert Ins Antlitz – Pasiphae

A mysterious buildup leads into a red-hot melodic core that fuses orchestral arrangements with powerful electronic textures. It all leads to even more mystery and evocative sonic landscapes. The audio sample used in the song is perfectly chosen, contributing to the melody’s feeling of cosmic adventure.

This one is definitely a body mover, but I prefer the “eyes-closed brain massage” part of it even more. It’s also one of the best songs I heard in 2017.

You can also purchase the (dark electronica) compilation (by Tympanik audio, a label that has several other amazing dark electronica artists such as Geomatic^ and Subheim^) which contains the song from this same location.

Subheim – Howl

It takes a while for the gloomy droning to lead to any sort of melody, but it is this exact atmosphere building that dark electronica master Subheim excels at.

Ghostly female voices lead the song into its foggy blossoming. This is as much melody as it is an experiential shard of some distant, unfathomable Universe.

I’m thankful for having shared the same lifetime with artists that have managed to translate the ineffable into sound.

Hol Baumann – A Forgotten Ritual

Mysterious in the beginning, mercilessly groovy all-throughout, here’s an atmospheric body-mover and a consistent head-bobber. Not only is this song full of energy, it is also very well composed and produced. It shines like black oil as it meanders its way through a labyrinth of vibration.

Electronic music has brought with it a staggering amount of diversity. The entire universe of sound suddenly became accessible, bringing with it supreme flexibility. Never before had artists such a freedom of experimentation as today. And it shows.

What does this have to do with this song? I just happen to find it a glowing example of what electronic music can mean today. Well, 8 years ago is not really “today” anymore but it’s contemporary enough.

Geomatic – Aftab E Siyah

Geomatic delivers dark electronic music of supreme quality. I’m slowly running out of good things to say about this project. Mysterious, groovy, sparsely populated by strange echoes from another universe, this song is highly representative of Geomatic’s art. Pump up the volume, lay back and hit “LAUNCH!”

El Huervo – Rest

It starts gently enough. A minute later, the second movement kicks in and any seasoned listener knows that they’re in for a good ride. It ebbs and flows, playing our imagination’s chords. It teases us for a while and then, a bit more than half-way through, it comes. Spitting fire and awesome low frequencies, the song’s third movement is what the artist was preparing us for all along. Enjoy the trip!

Trentemøller – Moan (Vocal Remix feat. Ane Trolle)

With its sharp sound and amazing attention to detail, this melody made it to the top of my best finds of this 2016. One can listen to this song for a dozen times and continue to find surprising details coming out from liquid depths that wobble and echo.

It’s danceable yet dreamy; at least until the planet-busting laser synth kicks in and turns the entire thing up to eleven. The word “obsessive” doesn’t quite do justice to this song. I have to stop…

“Thinking about you
Constantly thinking about you
Thinking about you
I’ve been thinking too much about you
See the sunset with no sleep at all
Constantly thinking about you
And I can’t get through this at all”

I’ll be thinking about this song for a long time. And, better yet, I’ll come back to it again and again and let my mind attack me with its exotic images.

Last but not least, I recommend watching the video too.

Geomatic – Alternate Universe

Behold Geomatic, master of dark electronica. And when I say dark, I mean mysterious, evocative, intense. This melody is all that and more. I can’t understand what the middle-eastern choirs are about, but they sure sound amazing coupled with the percussion and sweeping, encompassing texture of the instrumentals.

Geomatic have been on my radar ever since I’ve stumbled onto “Beyond the Beginning”^ last year via Spotify’s custom radio stations. In my book, that one ended up as the best song of 2015. Through each of the three albums I own, Geomatic confirms their status as one of the most interesting artists I’ve ever listened to.

Geomatic – Beyond the Beginning

Of a haunting beauty, Geomatic’s “Beyond the Beginning” manages to capture with amazing mastery the ineffable notion of something that doesn’t yet exist. The atmosphere and construction of this song make me think at exactly that: something beyond the beginning – a place where life and death are just two sides on a multidimensional dice. Nothing exists, yet everything does – the singularity of thought.

I would probably love this piece even if it would be called “Tom’s Never-ending Fall”, but I absolutely adore it with the title it has. Those three words are the only verse this song has, the only verse it needs. Let the melody ravage your imagination and wonder “what was, is or will be, beyond the beginning?”
