Desert Dwellers – Lotus Heart (Kalya Scintilla Remix)

This is what happens when two psybient titans collaborate. This song is chilled-out and in the same time body-moving. Behind this multilayered masterpiece there is a distinct mystical feeling, so… here’s a little magic to bless the week with.

I’ve featured both Desert Dwellers and Kalya Scintilla before and if you like what you hear, make sure you check Bluetech and Kaminanda out as well. Good listening gear, eyes closed highly recommended.

You can listen to the song for free, in good quality, on BandCamp, which is one of the best websites when it comes to supporting artists. You can also purchase the song (or album) from this same location. And in case you’re wondering, yes, I did purchase Kalya Scintilla’s album :).

Bluetech – 667 (Kalya Scintilla Remix)

With its incredible sound palette, a supreme composition and excellent production values, this is one of the best songs I’ve ever heard. There’s so much going on in these five minutes that it’s almost unbearable. Close your eyes now and let two of the masters of psybient play with your mind. Your imagination will cry with joy.

Ephemeral Mists – Gardens Of Reflection

There are very few psybient songs that I don’t like, so it’s difficult to select a Weekly from the dozens I love. This is a recent find so I let its age push it to the top of the list. It’s a really well structured melody featuring good rhythms, layered choirs and a rich sound palette. It’s “psybient by the book” in all the good ways one can interpret the expression.

You can listen to the song for free, in good quality, on BandCamp, which is one of the best websites when it comes to supporting artists. You can also purchase the song (or album) from this same location. And in case you’re wondering, yes, I did purchase Ephemeral Mists’ album :).

Kalya Scintilla – Rises In The East

Get ready to be snapped away into a universe built by a myriad sounds. There are more things happening here than on some entire albums. And yet… a powerful sense of purpose permeates the melody.

There are very few songs that score this highly on the “mind-blowing” scale.  Close your eyes and let your mind reach ecstasy through rhythm. And remember: bad sound ruins good music.

Desert Dwellers – Bodhi Tree Dub (Sunrise Mix)

When it comes to fusing Oriental influences and soundscapes with the best electronic music, Desert Dwellers are second to none – perhaps tied. This song is best listened using a sound system with some serious bass capabilities – you’ll understand why roughly 90 seconds into it.

A deep, bouncing bass permeates the song, almost as if to assure the listener that these guys aren’t messing around here. Completing the tune is a mystical-sounding chant, perfectly blending in with the flowing, pulsating melody.

You can listen to the song for free, in good quality, on BandCamp, which is one of the best websites when it comes to supporting artists. You can also purchase the song (or album) from this same location. And in case you’re wondering, yes, I did purchase a lot of Desert Dwellers from Bandcamp :).

Apollo 440 – Stealth Mass in F#M

If somebody would ask me to explain what life is without using words, I’d play this song for them. Actually, I’ve come to believe that words are of very little use when describing fundamental concepts such as life, consciousness or emotions. The more we use words, the further we get from what we try to describe. Most things need to be experienced to be understood.

Yet, here is my humble attempt to write a few words about this glorious song. It starts with her voice, a voice that surrenders to the mysteries of ineffable depths. Then comes the music. They orbit each other in a cathedral of majestic sound. The melody builds, flows, recedes and then comes back for the final ecstasy.

The journey is too beautiful to describe in anything but hyperbole. When I mentioned a cathedral of sound, I literally meant that. This song is architecture through music. There’s the deep, thumping pulse that contrasts the divine voice. There’s the lonely, repetitive chord, the echoing bell, the sweeping curtains of prolonged notes and sounds.

Hopefully these words will stir your curiosity. So dare to close your eyes and see what this song speaks to your mind. Take your own journey. Forget my words, throw them away and paint your own landscape.

When I posted this song on the FaceBook page of the Weekly Song, more than a year ago, I wrote a few different words about it. I’m pasting them below, as an alternate, perhaps even more honest review of this musical jewel.

“I truly rediscovered this song in 2013 and it became one of the most moving melodies that I ever had the joy to experience. I could write a short essay about the feelings and thoughts that this song evokes, but I fear that this will rob this work of art of some of its value. Take my word and listen to this one eyes closed, see what it does to you.”

Enigma – Age Of Loneliness (Carly’s Song)

This is what happens when an artist mixes electronic dance music together with powerful, evocative Mongolian chants, Gregorian choirs, and a mysterious voice delivering a deep, meaningful message. It’s one of the most moving melodies I’ve had the pleasure of hearing. It’s also quite an easy listen, which is why I flag such a song as “a wolf in sheep’s clothing”.

Enigma has always been one of my favorite musical projects. Michael Cretu is the man behind the name. Back in the when of this song, the early 90s, Michael was married with German pop singer Sandra and it is her voice you will hear. Inside the intricate cathedral of sound, her words speak of change, of courage, of hope.

“Carly don’t be sad,
Life is crazy
Life is mad.
Don’t be afraid.

Carly don’t be sad,
That’s your destiny
The only chance
Take it, take it in your hands.”

If you choose to listen to the melody through one of the high-quality streaming options below, make sure you also see the video. It’s quite beautiful. I think it’s the perfect imagery for this song.

Terry Oldfield – Dancer In The Void

Listening to this melody with my eyes closed is like traveling to another world. This is one of those rare gems that are good any time of the day and anywhere in this Universe. You can find it, and other like it, on Terry Oldfield’s “Journey Into Space”, an album released in 2012. Terry is the brother of Mike Oldfield, another great musician, author of the famous “Tubular Bells”.

You can listen to the song for free, in good quality, on BandCamp, which is one of the best websites when it comes to supporting artists. You can also purchase the song (or album) from this same location. And in case you’re wondering, yes, I did purchase Terry Oldfield’s album :).

Arbre Noir – Roam

Didgeridoo? Yes please! “Roam” is a cool psybient song which works great for creating an atmospheric mood. Arbre Noir sure know how to orchestrate their music because this melody ebbs and rises in a beautiful celebration of sound and pattern. The didgeridoo is very well integrated into the music and enriches it through the tribal dimension it adds.
