Solar Fields – Mystic Science

Now here’s a trip if there ever was one! This baby will take you away, far away and then even further away and when you think it’s done, it’ll take you another couple of Universes away and just when you thought you landed, it’s gonna take flight again and drag you another dozen Universes in X directions at once, where X is the number of multiverse dimensions you’re in, factorial!

Musically, what we have here is a steady and unstoppable flowing song of devious construction. Layers upon layers of deep, suggestive sounds are quietly shifting into existence. I’ve measured the song with my Spirit Buoyancy Meter and it scored a juicy 83 kiloquantiverses. Not bad, not bad at all!

You can listen to the melody for free, in good quality, on BandCamp, which is one of the best websites when it comes to supporting artists. You can also purchase the song (or album) from this same location. And in case you’re wondering, yes, I did purchase Solar Fields’s album :).

Aphex Twin – Xtal

Dreamy Xtal is one of the first songs I ever heard from famous electronica producer Aphex Twin. It’s the opener of a slow, ambient album. Oh, don’t get me wrong, the melody has plenty of beat, but it’s all subdued under a clever (or lucky) distortion that makes it seem like we’re listening to an old recording, coming from far away. The masterful intertwining of a female vocals sample enhances that effect.

Unfortunately, I can’t find any way of purchasing the album digitally from any ethical shop (such as BandCamp).

Delerium – The Seven Gates Of Thebes

Apparently the (more famous) Egyptian Thebes is known as “Thebes of the Hundred Gates” whereas the “Thebes of the Seven Gates” is located in Greece^. As far as I’m concerned, Delerium could have picked any ancient city as title for this song.

Despite the fact that this melody is a contemporary electronica ambient creation, the deep, thoroughly grounded bass, the mysterious choirs and the ghosty piano manage to conjure an aura of ancient knowledge. There are music warlocks at work here. Let yourself be carried away within their spell.

Ugress – Harakiri Martini

Careful, this one gets straight to business! And that’s just fine, because Ugress has a lot of work to do in the space of less than three minutes. It’s a funky sound pill that you can easily squeeze into the ear between two interruptions at work. The video Ugress attached to the song is as excellent as it can be for such a playful song. I’m not sure if it makes me want to dance or play. Is there a difference?

Autechre – Eutow

Don’t be deceived by the soft, airy beginnings of this song. A monolithic, dark-shining bass line will soon emerge. Assisted by rather traditional percussion, the deep, sweeping bass line is subjected to an array of risky acrobatics that are a pleasure to behold.

The song comes from Tri Repetae++, one of Autechre’s most critically acclaimed albums. The band’s beginnings are filled with such electronica gems (Amber is another excellent LP and so are the Garbage, Anti and Anvil Vapre EPs).

Faithless – God Is A DJ

Few artists have managed to combine dance music with intelligent, challenging writing. This song is almost twenty years old but there’s nary a wrinkle on it. Good music doesn’t age with time, it gets better. This is a melody that evolves and offers a great deal of diversity. It’s not only an instrumental fea(s)t, but also a statement for the creative, transformative power of art.

“This is my church
This is where I heal my hurts
It’s in the world I’ve become
Contained in the hum
Between voice and drum
It’s in the change
The poetic justice of cause and effect
Respect, love, compassion

This is my church
This is where I heal my hurts
For tonight
God is a DJ”

Fatboy Slim – Right Here, Right Now

The staircase leads higher and higher. Lights begin to circle everywhere around. And then the voice kicks in and brings us straight into the party. Like many of Norman’s songs, this one makes extensive use of sampling. There’s a lovely contrast between the melody’s soft, meandering foundation and the intense percussion and vocal samples. 1998 is right here, right now again and it’s awesome.

Asura – El Hai

This is one intense piece of soul-blowing song. The ethereal mystic vocals, the hypnotic percussion and the melancholic strings are woven together into a noble flow that graces the beauty of existence upon the eardrum. It’s one of those melodies that I’d use to describe life without using words (as long as, like me, the listener doesn’t understand the lyrics). I’m curious if anybody can translate what she’s saying.

Vitalic – Poney

Follow the gentle wavy sound bridge right into the heart of this disco cathedral. The relentless pounding will try to nail the sailing melody into the ground, but the sound beast still ends up soaring higher and higher. Will it eventually escape? It’s up to the listener to decide.

Oh, and make sure you check the YouTube version. The song’s video is awesome!

ATB – Trace Of Life

This one will take you places. Just close your eyes, relax and let the brain massage begin. The song is a bit repetitive, but it’s one of those fortunate cases when that’s exactly the point. Some melodies let you sit still while they show you their many different landscapes. This song is more like a vehicle. Get on board and navigate your own imagination. The rhythm is steady and reliable, the sound is rich and stimulating. And don’t be surprised if you’re tempted to move your body either.

This song, as well as the album it comes from, came as a rather big surprise for me. I hadn’t listened to ATB in many years. For me, the name was synonymous to his famous single, “9PM (Till I Come)”^. I was quite impressed by the difference in style between 1999 and 2014. 15 years is a long time so evolution isn’t that much of a surprise, but I was really happy to see where the evolution of ATB led. There are a lot of great tracks on “Contact”. It’s an album I can highly recommend.
