Yppah – Film Burn (feat. Anomie Belle)

This song is a wonderful advocate for the ground-breaking sound that can be crafted when artists take their audio alchemy to the next level. Alongside the innocent guitar, dry samples yearn for Anomie’s dreamy voice like the desert yearns for water.

You can listen to the melody for free, in good quality, on BandCamp, which is one of the best websites when it comes to supporting artists. You can also purchase the song (or album) from this same location.

t e l e p a t h テレパシー能力者 – 愛慕

Envelop yourself in this space aurora made of sound. Let soft synth tendrils caress your eardrum while soft percussion drips around you. Electronic space music at its best!

The artist translates to “t e l e p a t h Telepathic Ability Person” and the song title is “Love”. Love it indeed!

Kiasmos – Wrecked (65daysofstatic Remix)

Some songs really know how to spring a surprise. Don’t worry, it’s not going to bite, but boy when this baby kicks in… it makes one appreciate the value of a good build-up. Top-notch electronica!

Samael – Ways

“How long is a life how many ways can you try on
How long is your life how many ways did you try on
don’t need to reach the end when you know what’s there
no one knows what’s there…

get in get out don’t lose time in the roundabout
get in get out read your map if you ever doubt
try on try out all different sense
try on reach out for distant suns

the way we take, the one we don’t
the one we left, the one we change
the one that burns, the one that freezes
the one we built, the one we are
along the way there’s some ways we take another way

got power to ponder
to construct to structure
to be tuned, uninterfered
to conquer our inner self
to prevent and assure
to invent our future

fighting the resistance of time
with persistence of faith
softly, cunningly cleaning the dirt
wildly, radiantly drowning to rebirth

winged by pressure
dazzled by pleasure
distorted absorbed
restored again and again

there’s an after to every now…
an answer to every how
there’s an after to every now”

A hymn of change, an ode for being. A song that says a lot behind those wild distorted guitars and out-of-control drum machines. Vorph’s raspy voice is a peculiar vehicle for delivering this message, but some messages stand out more when they come in exotic packaging. Samael’s blend of electronic industrial metal may be difficult to stomach for some, but that’s why I started this review with the lyrics, because that’s one thing that anybody can and should take from this piece of music history.

Azam Ali – In Other Worlds

A dreamy, ritualistic creation that will transport awareness far and off on the wings of the beautiful, evocative voice wielding the keys to the portals of our imagination. Such Journey Songs are a testament to the power of sound.

Besides the excellent production values featured in this tune, I stand in awe at the magnificent fusion between electronic instruments and traditional ones. I was, am and will always be overjoyed by the way technology has increased the sound range that artists can use. Unlike others, artists can be trusted to use technology responsibly and respectfully.

“If love be revealed
In the spark of an eye
Could all be redeemed
In the sea of time
If the stars embed
Like nails into the ground
From the unheard prayers
That have torn up the skies
Would you will it all away
As you sail on your way?”

Autechre – 444

Get some good head gear, lie down, close your eyes and let this one take you places. This is the symbiosis between technology, mind and soul. Despite the relatively alert rhythm, the deep frequencies are so good at doing their brain-massage thing that this song never fails to send me into a state of inspired calm.

Way Out West – Killa

In spite of what the gentle first minute might indicate, don’t expect an easy ride here. This song is killing it – it’s an all-out assault on all frequencies, with an emphasis on the bass. It takes a while until take-off, but that’s how you roll when you want to bust the 10-minute “psychological threshold”: you take your time mixing everything in and you heat it slowly so that the listener doesn’t realize their eardrums are boiling.

Sure, it gets a bit repetitive, but hey, that’s exactly what tickles our brain. This one hit my spot at least.

The Prodigy – Narayan

With its stellar opening and hypnotic buildup spanning more than a minute, Narayan makes a statement: this song will endure. And it has. 20 years later, this massive creation hasn’t lost any bit of its originality.

It’s a lengthy tune, to be sure, but there are several movements at play that will keep the listener entertained throughout. This song is a must for any respectable music collection and, in fact, a distinguished artifact of human musical history.

Om Namo Narayana!

“If you believe the western sun is falling down on everyone
If you’re breaking free and the morning’s come
If you would know your time has come
If you believe the western sun is falling down on everyone
If you’re feeling firm, then I’ll travel on
If you feel it burn, your time has come

And I feel it
You feel another energy and I feel a power growing

Om Namo Narayana
Om Namo Narayana

I feel it
I feel it
You feel another energy…”

Argaman – Walk On Your Way (Day)

Warning: this track may contain traces of other dimensions. It may cause (at least) the perception of temporal shifting in the auditory cortex. Can be used by professionals to test the temporal lobe of the brain.

Jokes aside, never underestimate the beauty of tampering with and distorting rhythms. When done right, it’s exactly what a song needs to shine. Let yourself soar with this playful, airy tune and its dreamy singer.

“Walk on your way,
You paint your road,
Take off your load,
And be yourself.

Now you’re here,
Just keep it clear,
Without a fear,
the skies will tear.”

You can listen to the melody for free, in good quality, on BandCamp, which is one of the best websites when it comes to supporting artists. You can also purchase the song (or album) from this same location. And in case you’re wondering, yes, I did purchase Argaman’s album :).

Michael Mayer – Mind Games (feat. Ed Macfarlane)

Enough, enough, enough, enough, mind games.

I couldn’t help writing that. It’s because I love how the song starts. And guess what: I love how it continues even more, otherwise why would I even type these words?

Welcome to a musically playful exploration of a mentally complex topic. I feel that the vocals are spot on given the way the topic is approached (Ed does a great job of communicating a feeling of “this must end”). And when it comes to Michael Mayer’s music, I can only say that the way this song is layered and architected is highly entertaining. It’s almost as if two melodies are playing with each other. They’re very much alike and yet, with the use of (mostly) three simple chords, so different.

I tried to find the lyrics for the song (there’s some interesting sentences in there), but only found results that are clearly somebody’s (very) broken interpretation of what Ed sings. I can probably write a better “translation”, but I think it’s the artists that should publish the lyrics if they wish to.

Enough mind games!
