KoRn – Falling Away From Me

Angst and frustration sometimes need channeling. This is where such a song comes in, opening a gateway to a realm where such energies can not only live, but thrive and flourish into devastating beauty. There are no “wrong” feelings, and beauty can arise from any feeling.

KoRn have masterfully created a niche for themselves, one they continue to dominate even now, 25 years away after the release of their first album.

“Hey I’m feeling tired
My time is gone today
You flirt with suicide
Sometimes that’s ok
Hear what others say
I’m here standing hollow
Falling away from me
Falling away from me
Day is here fading
That’s when I would say
I flirt with suicide
Sometimes kill the pain
I can always say
‘It’s gonna be better tomorrow’
Falling away from me
Falling away from me”

Agnes Obel – Fuel To Fire (David Lynch Remix)

Some songs are only about music. Some others are only about words. Some are about atmosphere. There is no right or wrong. And even though this melody shines particularly through its atmosphere & lyrics, listen carefully and discover the mastery of faking monotony.

And yes, this is the David Lynch. He sure did a good number on this one! The original song is pretty good as well (which should go without saying if David Lynch decided to touch it – and no, I’m not one of his fans, it’s just semi-objective reality [that’s another word for statistical reality]).

“Do you want me on your mind or do you want me to go on
I might be yours as sure as I can say
Be gone be faraway
Roses on parade, they follow you around
Upon your shore as sure as I can say
Be gone be faraway”

Skeler – Falling Apart

Faded and subdued chords accompany the relentless sound of time ticking (and picking) away at life, which is exactly what this melody is about. The song’s grayed-out beginning soon unveils an epic and diverse soundscape. Melancholic to the extreme (that voice!) and yet… so, damn, massive!

“I don’t wanna fall apart
I wanna be alive with you
I’m running
I’m running
I’m running now out of time”

Bluetech – Two River Sisters

Despite it being a playful song from start to finish, there’s still a certain solemnity about it. Perhaps it’s the otherworldly chants and voices, or maybe it’s the thump’n’bass foundation. It’s a melody of delicate contrast. Dance the river sisters!

You can listen to the melody for free, in good quality, on BandCamp, which is one of the best websites when it comes to supporting artists. You can also purchase the song (or album) from this same location. And in case you’re wondering, yes, I did purchase Bluetech’s album :).

Kognitif – Babe I’m Gonna Leave You

Despite the rock-solid beat, this piece is all about atmosphere, distortions, samples and clever orchestration. And despite all the bad news that the song brings, ears couldn’t be happier with such an action-packed ride.

Ah! Kosmos – Wide (feat. Ozgur Yilmaz)

De’licious is the first word that comes to my mind as I try to review this fabulous song. It’s a passionate feast of crescendo orchestration transporting a solemn voice. And isn’t it just awesome when great music comes with a great video too?

It’s one of the most beautiful creations I’ve had the pleasure of witnessing in 2018.

Devin Townsend & Che Aimee Dorval – Mountaintop

Here’s a marvelous acoustic gem, sparkling with elegance and mystery. It’s a collaboration between one of the world’s most talented guitarists and a charming voice. The perfect soundtrack for a deserted early morning commute or a late misty evening walk.

“Oh, go with the man to the mountaintop
And all the way up, I’m only thinking about you, child
I know the way, I know the way now
Go with the man to the mountaintop
And all the’is you, child
And all the rain, just know it never will stop
Stop”

Enjoy the nice video too!

Jain – Makeba

Playful happy music at its best, here’s an honest and empowering vibe celebration. Jolly voices, funky dancing and catchy hooks. Dixit!

“I wanna hear your breath just next to my soul
I wanna feel your breasts without any rests
I wanna see you sing, I wanna see you fight
‘Cause you are the real beauty of human rights”

It’s even better when an great video accompanies an already good song.

Delerium – Lost and Found (feat. Jael)

I dedicate this beautiful, hopeful song, to all people who have lost something only to realize, later on, that what they had lost ultimately led them to life-changing, wonderful realizations. It’s one of Delerium’s most touching works.

Besides music from a duo that counts itself among the best chillout/electropop musicians, we also get to go on a moving and inspiring lyrical journey. The melody shines through its masterful use of contrast as the orchestration swings between two worlds.

The sweet video accompanying this creation can be a ladder for preparing one’s life for a big change and finally embracing that change.

“I really wanted to go
It hurt me too much to stay
I run away so fast
That my heart couldn’t find a way
And then you came along
And I was tired of my sadness
It seemed as though my life went on
But the feeling didn’t last

And then you came along
Holding on to everything that’s gone
Saving my life from going on (lost and found)
Thinking of what else I could have done
It wasn’t meant to be (lost and found)

[…]

I was back on my feet
You could say I was barely walking
But the cut was deep
And I was holding on to the past

[…]

He had stolen my illusions
And I needed them so badly
I grew tired of my confusion
‘Cause he was still there
Everywhere (everywhere)

You came along, and I was lost and found (lost and found)
Lost and found, my life went on, but I was lost and found
You came along when I was stuck in the past
There was a new life in sight
But I was blind”

Thorns – Vortex

Now, as a metal vocalist, there’s very few things indeed that you can say to make you more supremely badass than:

“My eye is the vortex from which nothing escapes
I am dematerialization of the self
I am the axis in the wheel of reincarnation
The endless singularity

I turn the spirals of existence
I am the slowing pace of life
I am the pulse of creation,
of inevitability and destruction

I balance the shifting tides of life
Everything must return to me

I am the beginning
and I am the end”

Jokes aside, the lyrics are impactful and they are vibrated into existence in a solemn way. Despite the heavy riffing involved, I consider this to be an atmospheric song, a powerful invocation coming from an occult Universe.

This comes from Thorns’ only full length release, a highly appreciated album bearing the (one man) band’s name. It’s a master-class in industrial black metal which I highly recommend.
