The Weekly Song category.

Yoann Feynman – Noir

It may not start from the first second, but before we know it, wicked synths and merciless pounding will start wreaking havoc. Nasty samples join soon after. One crescendo later and the dark side reaches climax. Hail contrast!

You can listen to the melody for free, in good quality, on BandCamp, which is one of the best websites when it comes to supporting artists. You can also purchase the song (or album) from this same location.

Wardruna – Isa

An acoustic and choral masterpiece the likes of which human history just loves to parade around the Universe with. Even without knowing anything about the folklore behind this song, the strength of life flows through it with unstoppable might. That may not be apparent in the first couple of minutes, because life just rests then. But just wait for the rest to end and for the musicians to really start shining.

The lyrics, with translation:

“Alt liv – kvilande
Alt liv – glimande”

“All life – resting
All life – shining”

You can listen to the melody for free, in good quality, on BandCamp, which is one of the best websites when it comes to supporting artists. You can also purchase the song (or album) from this same location.

Michael McCann – Icarus

This song is the very definition of epic. It’s a finale of divine proportions, mightily constructed through a crescendo of sweeping orchestra of strings, synths and beyond-majestic choirs.

And yes, this was created for Deus Ex – Human Revolution^, a must-play video game, one of the best games of 2010s.

The Prodigy – Climbatize

With its almost ritualistic mood, this 90s big beat electro masterpiece exhibits some amazing use of percussion, meshed together with a highly energetic and uplifting soundscape. Stand up, close your eyes and move your body.

This song comes from one awesome album (“The Fat of the Land”). I strongly recommend giving a spin to the entire thing.

Tom Hodge – Nothing Less Nothing More (Eivor)

… and sometimes life throws you one of these…

“This is where I want to be
This is all I need
Nothing less and nothing more
This is what I’ve been looking for

This is my greatest victory
My independency
Nothing holds me down no more
This is what I’ve been fighting for

This is all I need

This is where I want to be
I’m finally free

This is all I’m asking for
Nothing less and nothing more”

Ran – Lys

A song of light and life, arising with the force of Universal vibration. A song of spirit and divinity, blessed with Kati’s pure-as-fire voice. A song that cannot be opposed, only joined.

“Now bring Light
Now bring Life

Now Light
Now Life”

Miike Snow – Genghis Khan

Amusing and playful (the video even more), this song will probably slot right in to the “happy dancing melodies” category of the 2010s’ musical history. It’s more catchy than an autumn flu!

“But the waves hit my head
To think someone’s in your bed
I get a little bit Genghis Khan
I don’t want you to get it on
With nobody else but me”

Lazerhawk – Neondawn

As the synths rise slowly but surely, sweeping melodies emerge. Imagination is invited for a ride among the stars, aboard a dashing spacecraft. It’s a song about timing and atmosphere. It excels in both. A neon dawn indeed.

Motorcycle – As The Rush Comes (Gabriel & Dresden Chillout Mix)

Imagine deserted roads getting lost between misty hills. From above, a lonely car is like the sun among the clouds. Somewhere, a song is playing. A voice descends from the cold heavens. The sound flows like tame rivers.

A song to float on. To travel, to let go, to dream, to calm down, to disconnect, to imagine on.

Also, this is one of those cases where the remix is clearly better than the original (this is, of course, a subjective opinion).

“Traveling somewhere
Could be anywhere
There’s a coldness in the air
But I don’t care
We drift deeper
Life goes on
We drift deeper
Into the sound”

Andre Michelle – Construct Infinity

Because there are fewer layers of sound, minimal techno is a genre that relies heavily on beat construction. Since it’s techno we’re listening to, repetitive beats are easy to notice and can become unnerving. So, the scenery needs to change often. This song is a shining example of just how much carefully chosen isolated sounds and shifting tonalities can do to the melody.
