Andre Michelle – Construct Infinity

Because there are fewer layers of sound, minimal techno is a genre that relies heavily on beat construction. Since it’s techno we’re listening to, repetitive beats are easy to notice and can become unnerving. So, the scenery needs to change often. This song is a shining example of just how much carefully chosen isolated sounds and shifting tonalities can do to the melody.

Vitalic – One Above One

Welcome to a happy synth-fest, made even happier through contrast with the robotized singer. What about the song’s title? Cryptic wisdom is sometimes more awakening than wisdom, but perhaps I’m putting too much thought into a dance song. In any case, this is a piece that tempts the moving muscles as well as the thinking ones.

“One in the single and the first degree.
One Above One for eternity.
No unit or triad, source or cause for the one, super one, this is the one above those”

Argatu – Asta-i Hora-n Falticeni

High-pitched flutes and other traditional instruments are chained with a bassline and pounded by synth-drums. Ethnotronic is a genre that fuses ethnic vibes with electronic influences. In this case, the ethnic ingredients come from Romania, a country in Eastern Europe (where I happen to have been born). A “hora” is a traditional dance and Falticeni is a city in Romania, located in the historical region of Moldavia.

Orkidea – Neo Romance (feat. Ben Lord)

This song kicks off by dropping on us some amazing reverberating bass. The masterful use of reverb permeates throughout the melody. Evocative lyrics seem to prepare us for a ride of passion. And indeed, the drum machine powers on soon after. Dance your eardrums!

“It’s all I want is that first kiss
And all the kisses gonna start a fire
And I know you rightfully
Just try be bold
Come on and we’ll start it up
Nothing to the wise guy
No one is gonna to take us higher
My sunflower
My sunflower
Breathlessly endlessly raving and falling
I’m worried and cold, maybe take me, I’m holding [?]
I’m trying to find out
But the words won’t come out
Baby what’s your name
What’s your name
What’s your name
What’s your name
Oh we could find love, here and now”

Apollo 440 – The Machine In The Ghost

A piano, a trumpet, a guitar and a synthesizer walk into a bar. And then everything begins to swirl…

We have this concept of the “ghost in the machine”. But what if at the heart of the ghost there is a machine? With its mysterious textures, this song explores the concept, making use of samples and playing with unexpected sounds. Beware this one. It may throw your mind off balance without a moment’s notice.

Autechre – Basscadet (Basscadubmx)

Creatures made of sound roam the textured landscapes of Melodic Beauty Land. They call out to each other, either from depths immeasurable or from lofty heights. Their echoes fill endless voids, bringing the vibration of life. Close your eyes and ride your thoughts.

Delerium – Metamorphosis (feat. Kristy Thirsk)

A veil of sparkling chimes unfolds. Underneath, a majestic colored butterfly spreads its wings, mystic chants accompanying its rise. What colors does the butterfly have?

Sound transforms. It metamorphosizes itself and those that perceive it.

Sound is magic. It does unexplainable things for unexplainable reasons.

Sound is life. Vibration is creation.

Sound is neither good or bad. It is only when sound meets perception when such conclusions are drawn.

Sound inspires. These words were guided into existence by pulsating percussion, sweeping synths, and strange, crispy textures.

John Tejada – Beacht

The reverb is strong with this one… and used to great effect. Dusty samples are drowned in sweeping soundscapes, joined by tingly synths and all those playful exotic sounds that one is likely to stumble upon when it comes to electronic music.

“What’s up, song?”

Ishome – Earth

Even when factoring in that electronic music has a knack for the unusual, this still is an unusual song. There are unusual voices, unusual rhythms and an unusual atmosphere. And all this makes it unusually pleasant.
