Digitonal – Anaethmatics

Playfulness is this melody. It tip-toes around our ears, unfolding its airy rhythms and, after a minute or so, it starts its joyful dance. Like any good play, it doesn’t overstay its welcome – it just grabs attention and leaves its echo in our memory. The song comes from the album “Beautiful Broken”. I can certainly testify towards the beauty of the composition. Don’t know about the “broken” part.

You can listen to the song for free, in good quality, on BandCamp, which is one of the best websites when it comes to supporting artists. You can also purchase the song (or album) from this same location. And in case you’re wondering, yes, I did purchase Digitonal’s album :).

Sadly, the song is not available on YouTube, but that’s fine because you can listen for free on BandCamp (see above) and Deezer.

Bob Moses – Far From The Tree

It ramps up slowly but determinedly, marching forward with a solid thumping bass that can turn subwoofers into weapons. Then the voices start, rising in beautiful monotony and leading up to the few lyrics that are sung. The melody features an interesting mix between the underlying scattered beat and a carefully put together accompaniment for the singer.

This song reminds me of a saying in Romanian: “the splinter won’t fall far from the tree”. It is usually said when children follow in the footsteps of parents. However, I think many of us do fall quite far from the tree…

Eskmo – We Got More

But it’s true, isn’t it? We got more than we had before. The way the words are spoken and the way the music frames them is strangely compelling. “As a whole, we got more than we had before. And that’s that”, the song whispers in this listener’s mind.

This is one entertaining ride.  I feel the “addiction” potential in it. It’s a groovy piece with a solid thumping tempo. Topping things up is a wonderfully crazy video. As I was watching it, I realized that the graphical style is familiar to me. The way the animations are combined and the playfulness behind them made me think of a certain artist. I was too busy being entertained by the video to read” the words my subconscious was texting me. And I didn’t need to, because, sure enough, at the end of the video, that exact artist was mentioned. Cyriak^! I erupted into mad laughter as I was thanking the Universe for bringing these artists together and allowing me to bask in the glorious heat caused by the union of their intellects.

Yonderboi – I Am Cgi

Even though it starts with a rather plain guitar, there’s something about those early seconds that betray this song for the chameleon that it really is. Soon enough, all sorts of other rhythms and sounds pop out of nowhere and it becomes harder and harder to slap a genre over this melody.

And why would we? Genres may be good for helping us find more of the music that we like, but at times, the terminology that we use to categorize works of art becomes the fence that limits the artist’s creativity. The good news is that Yonderboi didn’t allow himself to be limited by anything.

Photek – Aviator

Sometimes a song shows up that is rather straightforward in its arrangement and yet manages to deliver quite the ear massage. The steady percussion is joined by some lonely chords and a set of flying keyboards, waving and meandering all around the place. Simple and addictive.

Nigel Stanford – Cymatics

Amazing music can be found at the intersection between rock and electronica. Nigel Stanford is one of the most promising artists I’ve had the pleasure of listening recently. In its entirety, his “Solar Echoes” album is a fascinating journey, full of awesome moments and highly original sound.

This song in particular is quite a ride. Vibrant bass lines intertwine with airy textures while a powerful sense of purpose and direction permeates the acoustic construction. Towards the end, I have an irresistible urge to jump in the air. Play it and you’ll understand why.

Oh, and the video is absolutely gorgeous too. Make sure you see it!

I loved the album so much that after a single listen, I went right ahead and purchased it straight from the artist’s website, in lossless format, of course.

Nervous Testpilot – The Plan

Get ready for a unique blend of electronic music. It starts with a bang and then immediately quiets down, perhaps a sign of things to come? Through beautifully chosen vocal samples, it gently goes on its way, building up intricate soundscapes. Diverse, enjoyable and action-packed, this melody has quite a personality.

The song and the entire album it belongs to is one of the best game soundtracks I know of. I’ve had quite a bit of trouble deciding what melody to feature, but ultimately, the female vocal samples and clever construction of the song won over its “competitors”. “Switch” and “Triumph” were almost tied with this one so, if you like what you hear, make sure you go searching for some more.

Inofaith – Nocturne

This melody is a testament to the work of artists in general, and one artist in particular. The spoken lyrics underline the connection between art, love and the human drive to create universes. The relaxing and enjoyable music turns this into a highly-inspiring experience. And somehow, it always makes me move my body.

“Most of my ideas come out of complete silence.
My work, is a direct reflection of my personality.
Work to me, you know it’s, it’s who I am.
I think what’s hard, is, going against the current,
…trying to be something else… you know.

You have to love the process.
Be good at what you do.
There’s no substitution, for hard work
There’s not a better feeling in the world 🙂

You need to take that time for yourself, to realize why you’re here.
You’re here to create!

What happens to good artists is that,
when you create art, from the need to be loved…
…you do your best.

Silence is very important.
Most of my ideas come out of complete silence.
We all need to allow, the silence.
There’s so much noise.

It’s important for people to create their own worlds.
You have this world in which you live in.
But I think that we should be creating a sub-world to protect us.”

Om Unit – The Silence (feat. Jinadu)

Every now and then, a song manages to evoke the feeling and wonder of falling in love. The melody’s powerful lyrics are accompanied by a beautiful composition and carried by a passionate voice. Such art makes me happy that I have been given the opportunity to experience all… THIS.

“I look into your eyes,
such a delicate array of light
surrounds you now
Dancing in the afterglow,
your sacred heart
who calls my name
How I long to be
in the center of your storm
that rages gracefully
Landscapes made of light by the setting of your sun

The silence, it burns away my darkest thoughts
The silence, it opens up my every door

Breaking into my heart, suppress the doubt
Ushering the courage, the restless fight within me now
Open up the story, the pages burn
Breathing into this life, serenity in every part

The silence, it burns away my darkest thoughts
The silence, it opens up my every door”

Delerium – Silence (feat. Sarah McLachlan)

Let yourself soar through a heavenly landscape of sound. You’ll find that Sarah’s moving voice has the perfect companion in the beautifully orchestrated instrumental ladder towards perfection.

This melody was famous almost a decade ago due to a remix by Tiesto, which, in my opinion, completely ruined the sacred feeling of this amazingly powerful song.

Even though I had heard Delerium before, it was a car ride around the year 2011 that brought the band back into my life. Even at low volume and interrupted by occasional conversation, this song shone through. This time, I was ready to explore what has become my unrivaled, favorite band for the past 5 years straight.

Delerium’s art might be confused with a sort of danceable, electronic pop music. Perhaps this is good, because hiding under the easy-listenable sounds are often very beautiful lyrics. For every hit-song, there are many gems hidden among Delerium’s albums, just waiting to be discovered.

Let the ritual begin :).

“Passion chokes the flower, till she cries no more
Possessing all the beauty, hungry still for more.

Heaven holds a sense of wonder, and I wanted to believe
That I’d get caught up when the rage in me subsides
In this white wave I am sinking, in this silence
In this white wave, in this silence, I believe”
