Delerium – Sky (Tears From Heaven) (feat. Kristy Thirsk)

A gentle beginning leads the listener to a menacing bass line. But bear with it and be lead to a moment when the song metamorphoses into one of the most beautiful harmonies I’ve ever heard. Kristy truly shines as a singer, following the dualistic construction of the melody to perfection. At times she feels hopeless and depressed, only to arise to ecstasy a minute later.

The lyrics are wonderful, the music is sublime. I am happy to have lived a life that has led me to appreciate Delerium’s art to its full potential. Songs like this remind me that often, happiness is measured in tears. May we all be forgiven and may we all forgive.

“Oh, when the lights are low
Tears from heaven will fall
On my heart, on my heart
I can feel them clean my soul
And take my sadness away
When the lights are low
I’m not alone, I’m not alone, no”

This Weekly Song entry has been brought from the FaceBook archive of Weekly Song^. This project was originally started through a FaceBook page, about 13 months prior to launching Mentatul. Slowly but surely, the entire FaceBook archive will be brought here.

The original FaceBook review was: This profoundly emotional melody features one of the most beautiful voices known to me, Kristy Thirsk. Collaborating with her was a brilliant decision by Delerium, as she adds a dimension of haunting beauty to the song. This piece is also very powerful on the lyrical side, making it one of my all-time favorites. Enjoy!

Photek – Aviator

Sometimes a song shows up that is rather straightforward in its arrangement and yet manages to deliver quite the ear massage. The steady percussion is joined by some lonely chords and a set of flying keyboards, waving and meandering all around the place. Simple and addictive.

You can purchase the song (or album) from Hard Wax. And in case you’re wondering, yes, I did purchase Photek’s album :).

Nigel Stanford – Cymatics

Amazing music can be found at the intersection between rock and electronica. Nigel Stanford is one of the most promising artists I’ve had the pleasure of listening recently. In its entirety, his “Solar Echoes” album is a fascinating journey, full of awesome moments and highly original sound.

This song in particular is quite a ride. Vibrant bass lines intertwine with airy textures while a powerful sense of purpose and direction permeates the acoustic construction. Towards the end, I have an irresistible urge to jump in the air. Play it and you’ll understand why.

Oh, and the video is absolutely gorgeous too. Make sure you see it!

I loved the album so much that after a single listen, I went right ahead and purchased it straight from the artist’s website, in lossless format, of course.

The Handsome Family – Far From Any Road

This song starts with some of the most beautiful percussion I’ve heard lately. It’s exquisitely laid-back and relaxing but in the same time, solemn and evocative. The lyrics bring home what is definitely a true musical gem.

Alternative country is a very interesting musical style. These handsome artists and their expertly mixing indie folk in it have just made it even more interesting. I wish this song was 2 hours long, but its short length is what makes it so charming. Welcome to the paradox that is art.

“From the dusty mesa, her looming shadow grows
Hidden in the branches of the poison creosote

She twines her spines up slowly towards the boiling sun,
And when I touched her skin, my fingers ran with blood.

[…]

And rise with me forever across the silent sand,
And the stars will be your eyes and the wind will be my hands.”

Ott – Owl Stretching Time

There were strange sounds coming from within the beatbox. The Ear approached and, with a greedy grin, attached itself to the musical device. Absorbing Ott’s delicious sound nectar, the Ear was getting closer to ecstasy minute after minute.

The music was chasing imagination over the Mountains of Impossible and Ear was delighted. Owl was stretching time so that Ear could cross the Valley of the Infinite in just a few seconds. Finally, Ear found the magic key and this is where words finally reach the end of their usefulness.

Enya – Orinoco Flow

There are very few songs of which you can say “oldie but Goldie” with as much satisfaction. This beautiful musical poem was released at the end of the 80s and topped the charts in more than a few countries. True to its name, the melody flows like few others. With its excellent production values and clever use of reverb, this song was way ahead of its time – and this makes it as actual today as it was 30 years ago.

Surprisingly, the same can be said about the video, which uses simple graphical techniques that look beautiful even in the 21st century. Good job Enya & crew!

“From the north to the south, Ebudae into Khartoum,
From the deep sea of clouds to the island of the moon,
Carry me on the waves to the land I’ve never been,
Carry me on the waves to the lands I’ve never seen.”

Kaminanda – Ritual Ecologies

It’s not easy to make good quality psybient music. If the beat is too alert, the atmosphere is ruined. If the melody is too slow or simple, then it definitely isn’t psy. Among the few artists that do psybient right, Kaminanda is one of the most promising. This song flows perfectly and relentlessly. Give it a listen and let the music play your mental drums.

Au4 – In Three Seconds I’ll Be Gone

“Here’s a story about a girl I once loved
And I’d still love her if she was still around.”

Groovy, beautifully constructed, powerful and diverse, this melody showcases fascinating vocal synergy and witty lyrics. Prepare for an unleashing of samples, synthesizers and traditional rock instruments, all of it supporting his and her voice.

This song comes from one of the best rock albums I’ve heard in the past few years. There are some impressive lyrical gems scattered through Au4’s “And Down Goes The Sky”. I highly recommend listening to the entire album, especially since it’s freely available on the artist’s website!

“Oh when I came here I was lost and forgotten
Until then the sun rose in the dawn.
And I just meant to stay forever here running
But in three seconds I’ll be gone.

And I can’t remember my name. It’s forgotten,
And they all told me I was wrong.
‘Cause I just meant to stay forever here loving
But in three seconds I’ll be gone.”

Desert Dwellers – Lotus Heart (Kalya Scintilla Remix)

This is what happens when two psybient titans collaborate. This song is chilled-out and in the same time body-moving. Behind this multilayered masterpiece there is a distinct mystical feeling, so… here’s a little magic to bless the week with.

I’ve featured both Desert Dwellers and Kalya Scintilla before and if you like what you hear, make sure you check Bluetech and Kaminanda out as well. Good listening gear, eyes closed highly recommended.

Ozric Tentacles – Spyroid

This melody scores an excellent 8.5 out of 10 on the CES. That’s the Closed Eyes Scale, which measures how awesome a song can be when experienced eyes closed and with some good listening gear. Space rock titans Ozric Tentacles are back on the menu.
